On day one many top seeded players left the tournament with sad expressions, but the favorites on day two were luckier than their competitors.

Defending women’s singles champion Tai Tzu Ying got off to a great start with an easy match against Nitchaon Jindapol who had a hard time keeping up with Tai, who defeated her in straight sets with the score 21-15, 21-9. In the second round, Tai will play against the Canadian player Michelle Li.

Last years runner up for the men’s singles title Chou Tien Chen had it a bit more difficult in his first match. On the opposite side of the net Lu Guang Zu challenged Chou. The Taiwanese player won a convincingly first set 21-13 but struggled in the second where Lu stepped up his game and won 21-17. In the end of the third set, the second seeded Chou pulled away and won 21-17.

A player who wasn’t as lucky in her first match was Saina Nehwal who lost to Sayaka Takahashi. In the first set Sayaka dominated Nehwal and won 21-15. After the first set Nehwal found her footing, but after a nail-biting second set, she saw herself defeated by the Japanese.

Late afternoon the audience expected a real treat when the two very, on paper an world rank, equal men’s doubles Goh/Tan and Ashan/Setiawan faced each other. With some wonderful badminton with quick rallies and shots worthy of a show, people got to see why these two pairs are 2nd and 10th in the world rankings. Second seeded Ashan/Setiawan danced across the floor and barely letting Goh/Tan in the match by winning 21-16, 21-14.
