World number one men’s double, Marcus Gideon/Kevin Sukamuljo, thunder through to the semifinals after an unproblematic win in the quarterfinal.
Facing sixth seeded Han Cheng Kai/Hao Dong Zhou, the Indonesian “Minions” were clear favorites in the showdown and they indeed managed to live up to the expectations taking in the triumph by 21-16, 21-14.
No surprise they were happy about the win:
– We are feeling happy about the match today. It was not an easy match, but we are controlling the shuttle better than the opponents, said Gideon/Sukamuljo after the match.
It was supposed to be a close match between the Chinese pair Cheng Kai Han/Hao Dong Zhou and the world’s number one Marcus Gideon/Kevin Sukamuljo. Even though the quarterfinal was just another day at the office for “The Minions”.
The head to head were 2-2 between the two pairs Han Cheng Kai/Hao Dong Zhou and Marcus Gideon/Kevin Sukamuljo. All four matches were in three games. Therefore, expectations were high to the quarterfinal at the DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR. But it was not quite the close match it was supposed to be.
The pair from Indonesia had a walkover win in the previous round which gave them a day off where their opponents had to put effort in to . The Indonesians were strong and even though the start of first game was a tight affair the doubt disappeared at the middle of first game. From there were only on way for the world’s number one.
Last tournament the Indonesians played, Korea Open, the quarterfinal was the end. Therefore, the Indonesian sure had high hopes to win the match and advance to the semifinal at the DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR.
The match started just as expected. The points were won equally by the pairs. The shuttlecock was moving fast and the entire first game characterized by a lot of smashes at the body. The Indonesians did not give the shuttlecock full power in the smashes until the score 15-15. Here they pushed the throttle to max and won 21-16.
The second game were a different experience and as the game moved on the Indonesian showed why they are the highest ranked pair at the moment. With a streak from 6-2 to 12-2 the Indonesian seemed to cruise through to the semifinals. But it ain’t over before the fat lady sings. Han/Zhou won multiple points by their offensive play. At the end it was just not enough, and “The Minions” won the match 21-16, 21-14.
The two pairs Cheng Kai HAN/Hao Dong ZHOU and Marcus Gideon/Kevin Sukamuljo had played four times before going into the game. Of the four times both pairs had won two matches each. Therefore, it was exciting to watch who would take the win today. Last time they met were in the Badminton Asia Championship in April. Here the world’s best ranked pair Gideon/Sukamuljo emerged at the end as the winner 21-13, 19-21, 21-16.
